CHAPTER NINETEEN

CLAUDIA

I’ve about got the November calendar finalized and the email with all the bullet points ready to send off to Public Relations when a commotion outside my office door has me looking away from my computer screen.

It’s not Beckett, because he’d be far louder than that. His voice deeper. The noise angrier.

This noise is cheerful and shrill, and I get to my feet to see who’s come in. I’ve barely gained the door when I realize it’s Tabby, Beckett’s secretary. She’s back from her maternity leave.

Or she should be in another week or so. Today, she’s brought in her baby, and I’m drawn to the infant in a way I can’t describe. Smiling, I leave my office and head toward the couple of desks where Sybil and Tabby usually sit.

Tabby’s baby is sitting in her carrier on the desk, and as I arrive, Tabby lifts the infant out. “We named her Penny,” she says, grinning at her baby.

“She’s the cutest thing alive,” I say.

“She really is,” Sybil says. “Can I have her?” She takes the little girl, who’s decked out from head to toe in pink, from her bow to her booties. “Oh, Tabby, she’s simply amazing.” She coos at the little girl while I step into Tabby.

“Hey.” I give her a hug and pull back. “We are dying here without you.”

“I know I am,” Beckett says from behind me, and Tabby straightens. She tugs on the hem of her shirt, and she looks like she’s been stunned by a taser when Beckett laughs and engulfs her in a hug too.

“Mister Fletcher,” she says, her voice marked with scandal.

“Don’t worry,” Sybil says in her baby-coo voice. “He and Claudia are dating.”

“You’re what?” Tabby pulls away from Beckett like he’s the source of the taser electricity. She looks at me with clear shock, her eyes blinking and blinking like she has to do it manually. “You’re dating him? You don’t even—”

I don’t have a baby to distract me, but I shoot Sybil a glare I wish had knives coming out of it. “Like Sybil hasn’t been texting you for the past few weeks.”

“Am I really that different?” Beckett asks, and that brings all of our attention back to him. He looks from me, to Sybil—who cowardly uses the baby to avoid eye contact—to Tabby. He folds his arms, making himself look bigger, and glares. “Well?”

“Oh, there you are, Mister Fletcher.” Tabby grins, and I manage to crack a smile for half a second. Beckett sees it, though, and he is not amused.

“You’re…a little…” I look to Sybil for help, but she’s curled up in her desk chair, that adorable pink-dressed human consuming her whole attention.

“Barky?” Tabby supplies.

“I mean, you used to be,” I say to Beckett as I move a little closer to him. I’ve never been one for overt displays of affection with any of my boyfriends, and Beckett is no different. Certainly not here in the office.

“And so arrogant,” Tabby says.

“Okay,” I tell her. Usually, I don’t mind
